Venue
The host
TYPES 2027 is hosted by the University of Udine (Università degli Studi di Udine), and in particular by its Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics.
to be confirmed
The exact lecture rooms and the campus hosting the conference will be announced here, together with a map and directions from the city centre.
The city
Udine is the historical capital of Friuli, in the north-east corner of Italy, close to both Slovenia and Austria. It is a compact city of about 100,000 inhabitants: the centre is walkable end to end in twenty minutes, and the hills of the Alpine foothills and the Adriatic coast are each less than an hour away.
The centre is built around Piazza Libertà, often described as the finest Venetian square on the mainland, and the castle on the hill above it, which looks out over the Friulian plain to the Julian Alps. Udine was the city of Giambattista Tiepolo, whose frescoes can be seen in the cathedral, in the Oratorio della Purità and in the Patriarchal Palace.
Around Udine
Within an hour by train or car:
-
Cividale del Friuli
A UNESCO World Heritage site for its Lombard monuments, on the Natisone river, twenty minutes by train.
-
Aquileia
One of the largest cities of the Roman empire, whose basilica holds an extraordinary early Christian mosaic floor. Also a UNESCO site.
-
Palmanova
A nine-pointed star fort built by the Venetian Republic in 1593, and a textbook of Renaissance military architecture.
-
Collio and the wine hills
The hills north and east of the city produce Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Picolit, and are good walking country in June.
Food
Friuli sits where Italy, the Alps and central Europe meet, and the food shows it: San Daniele ham, Montasio cheese, frico, game and polenta, alongside the white wines the region is known for. The centre of Udine keeps the habit of the tajut, a small glass of wine taken standing at the bar in the late afternoon.
Weather
June in Udine is warm: daytime temperatures are typically between 22 and 30 °C, with the occasional thunderstorm rolling down from the mountains. Light clothing and an umbrella are both sensible.
Travel
By air
The nearest airport is Trieste Airport (TRS), at Ronchi dei Legionari, which has its own railway station: trains reach Udine in about 35 minutes. APT bus line G51 runs to Udine as well, taking 40 minutes when it goes non-stop on the motorway and about an hour otherwise. Other options, roughly in order of convenience:
| Airport | Distance | Connection to Udine |
|---|---|---|
| Trieste (TRS) | 45 km | Train from the airport station, about 35 min; or APT bus G51, 40-60 min |
| Venice Marco Polo (VCE) | 130 km | Bus or taxi to Mestre, then train, about 2 h 30 |
| Venice Treviso (TSF) | 120 km | Bus to Treviso or Mestre, then train, about 2 h 30 |
| Ljubljana (LJU) | 150 km | Bus or car, about 2 h 30 |
| Klagenfurt (KLU) | 140 km | Car, about 2 h |
| Milan, Rome, Munich, Vienna | — | Long-distance trains via Venice, Verona or Villach |
By train
Udine is on the line from Venice to Austria and is served by direct regional and Frecciarossa/Intercity trains. Indicative direct journey times:
- Venice (Mestre or Santa Lucia): about 1 h 30
- Trieste: about 1 h 15
- Milan: about 4 h
- Vienna and Salzburg: direct daytime and night services via Villach
- Ljubljana: via Villach or Trieste
Tickets are sold by Trenitalia and, on some routes, by Italo. The station, Udine Centrale, is a fifteen-minute walk from Piazza Libertà.
By road
Udine sits on the A23 motorway (Palmanova-Tarvisio), which joins the A4 (Turin-Trieste) at Palmanova, 25 km south. Coming from Austria, the A23 runs down from the Tarvisio pass; from Slovenia, the border crossings at Gorizia and Fernetti are within an hour.
Getting around the city
Udine is small enough to cross on foot. City buses are run by TPL FVG, and a regional day ticket covers buses and regional trains across Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which is useful for excursions to Cividale, Aquileia or the coast.
Detailed directions from the station and the airport to the conference venue, with maps, will be added once the venue is confirmed. to be confirmed
Accommodation
to be announced
A list of hotels, with any rates negotiated for TYPES 2027 participants, will be published on this page when registration opens. Booking instructions and the booking deadline will be given there.
Practical advice
Udine is a compact city and most hotels in or near the historic centre are within twenty minutes’ walk of the station and the main square. Early June is a pleasant but busy time in Friuli, so booking a couple of months ahead is wise.
When choosing, note that:
- the historic centre (around Piazza Libertà, Via Mercatovecchio and Piazza Matteotti) puts the restaurants and the evening life on your doorstep;
- the area around Udine Centrale station is convenient for day trips and for early departures, and is a fifteen-minute walk from the centre;
- once the venue is confirmed, this page will say which neighbourhoods are most convenient for reaching it in the morning.
Besides hotels, there is a reasonable supply of bed and breakfasts and short-term apartments in the centre, and the usual booking platforms cover the city well. Student accommodation options, if available in June, will be listed here.
